The sun is shining! Solar smart charging got even better with visualization

Solar smart charging is one of the most used features in our app and it has got even better. We’re excited to introduce our new Solar Visualization, a tool that helps users get the most out of their solar energy when charging their EV.

See your solar charging in action

Based on a lot of user requests, who wanted to have a better understanding of how we maximise the use of solar energy. We’ve developed a way for users to visually track when we charge on solar energy. Now, they can see how much solar energy is forecasted for their charging location and how much is charged by their own car. This clear view helps them understand their energy use and make smarter charging decisions.

Making the most of solar energy

Our Solar Visualization tool helps users maximize the use of solar power. Solar panels are super popular among EV drivers and adoption rates are much higher compared to the average household. In the Netherlands, our home turf, more than 80% of EV drivers charging at home have solar panels. Did you know that a typical solar panel of 400 Watt here can produce about 400 kWh per year? That is about 2000 kilometers of clean driving.

Saving money and increasing self-consumption

With the further growth of solar energy in Europe the need to consume this theirselves is further increasing. Energy suppliers in the Netherlands included injection penalties, while in other countries the injection tariff is much lower compared to the tariff the user pays when consuming energy from the grid. The penalties and gap in price are already above 10 ct/kWh and will only further increase in the future. Our improved feature helps users save money by making sure more of the solar energy they generate is used to charge their EVs. This way, they can reduce charging cost and increase self-consumption.

Avoiding wasted solar energy

The massive success of solar energy in certain neighborhoods has the downside that too many households want to inject solar energy at the same time. When this is happening, the voltage increases locally, and at some point, solar panels are forced to shut their production, known as curtailment. It is necessary to keep the grid and appliances in the neighborhood safe. We hear more and more users in our community facing this issue, and they are literally wasting their solar energy. By increasing their self-consumption with solar smart charging, they prevent these curtailment events and ensure more solar energy can be produced.

In this scenario, solar panels were forced to shut down around 10:00. By plugging an EV around 11:30, the voltage decreased locally, allowing the user to use the solar power to charge their car during an hour and a half.

Free for all users

The best part? Our new Solar Visualization feature is free for all users of the white label smart charging apps with the solar feature enabled we develop. We want everyone to be able to make the most of their solar energy and support a sustainable future.

We hope you and your users enjoy this new feature as much as we enjoyed creating it. Encourage your users to download the latest version of your app and start making the most of their solar energy today!
