Vattenfall Case Study

Vattenfall uses the Jedlix platform to help its energy and charging customers to reduce costs and charge more on renewable energy. Learn more about their experiences in this case study.

Vattenfall, one of Europe's leading renewable energy companies, has partnered with Jedlix to enable smart charging services for its energy retail and charging customers. Thanks to a native API integration, the smart charging services are available directly in the Vattenfall Energy app. This helps customers reduce their charging costs and charge more on local, renewable energy.

Smart charging, a cornerstone of a major ambition

Vattenfall works hard on fossil-free living. This ambition was recently reinforced by winning a significant offshore wind tender in the Netherlands. In addition to wind energy, Vattenfall has seen a significant increase in the adoption of solar panels by its customers.

Vattenfall not only provides and facilitates renewable energy for millions of clients in the Netherlands but also offers energy services like charging stations, making the transition to clean mobility easier for EV drivers.

With smart charging, these aspects combine harmoniously. The flexibility of the charging process helps to avoid charging during expensive peak times in the evening and encourages charging during periods of low prices and high renewable energy production. This strategy benefits the customer by reducing their energy bill, increasing their solar self-consumption, and providing the flexibility to balance the energy grid.

A versatile smart charging offer

Smart charging benefits both the energy utility and EV driver. But to enable this on a large scale, it requires accommodating a range of customer scenarios and various integrations. Factors such as car manufacturers, charging stations, energy tariffs, and home solar, ideally all operate within the Vattenfall app and a virtual power plant. This is where the versatility of the Jedlix platform comes into play, making it the partner of choice for Vattenfall.

Jedlix provides an API for direct integration into its partner app. This interface supports various connectivity and smart charging services. It accommodates car-centric, charger-centric connectivity, or a combination of both.

Furthermore, the Jedlix platform natively supports solar charging and all relevant energy tariffs, including the recently introduced dynamic tariff. All these electric vehicle assets and users are aggregated in a virtual power plant to directly reduce Vattenfall's energy procurement and balancing costs.

The reward module of Jedlix, which provides additional rewards for grid balancing participation, is the finishing touch for a compelling customer proposition.

Harald Berendsen, lead e-mobility at Vattenfall:

“We believe that Jedlix’s platform offers EV driver the best smart charging solution available today. They have the right platform and vision to ensure our customers will benefit from a market-leading experience. We are very happy with the integration of the smart charging functionality in the Vattenfall Energy App. This upgrades the quality of our app and gives customers even more insight in their energy usage and steering opportunities. Besides the better customer experience, It also helps us to build and leverage the much-needed flexibility that EV charging can provide. It was a great fit for both our energy retail, charging and trading business, something quite unique in this market.”

Jorg van Heesbeen, CBO at Jedlix:
“The transition to renewable energy and mobility can only happen with the support of major players like Vattenfall. As a result, we at Jedlix are very proud to support Vattenfall and excited to see how they enable all this in the Vattenfall Energy app”
